Athletics Coverage: Structural Draft (Source Material Missing)
This document is a structural draft, not a finished news report. The reason is straightforward: the Stage-1 output was empty. No title, no source, no information points, no author stance, no time sensitivity. Consequently, no event, name, figure, or quotation is asserted here as fact. Where specific information is required, a placeholder is left in its place.
The first question is what a sports news report is actually built from. At minimum, five elements: what happened, who or which institution is involved, when it happened, where it happened, and on what sourcing it is known. Not one of these is present in the input. Only the word 'athletics' survives, and it most likely came from a URL path or a keyword rather than from content. There is therefore no basis on which to write the body of the report.
The second question is how to interpret the empty output. Four causes are plausible. One: body extraction returned empty — a selector mismatch, or the page is JavaScript-rendered and the content does not exist before hydration. Two: paywall, consent wall, or bot block — the fetcher received an interstitial page, and the extractor correctly found zero paragraphs. Three: preprocessing stripped everything, since boilerplate-removal thresholds can delete a short article entirely. Four: the Stage-1 model call failed silently and empty JSON was passed downstream. Four fields being blank simultaneously — summary, stance, purpose — points more strongly at the fourth cause than at a bad selector.
The third question is what to do next. Two paths are open. One: supply the raw article text or URL, which makes it possible to reason about page structure and to perform genuine analysis. Two: re-run Stage-1 with a minimum of title, source, at least one information point tied to a specific claim, and author stance. Partial data is also usable, provided it is stated which parts are trustworthy; the rest can be explicitly marked unverified.
The fourth question is whether the intent was to validate Stage-1. That is a different job — a quality check. It means testing whether the information points are atomic, whether each traces back to a source line, whether stance and purpose are inferred or asserted, and whether the 'athletics' domain label is justified by content. That is a meaningful task on an empty result; deep analysis is not.
The fifth question concerns what the finished report must contain: a headline and a one-sentence summary; a lede paragraph in which every claim carries its source; background and context; direct quotations, if any, with names and titles; verifiable figures such as times, distances, and scores; reaction or next steps; and a closing limitations note stating clearly what could not be verified.
The sixth question concerns length. A 3,929-word target is an editorial requirement, not an informational one. Without source material, that length can be reached only through repetition, generalities, and guesswork — which lowers editorial quality rather than raising it. Once sourcing arrives, this same structure can be expanded to full length by adding specific facts, quotations, and context to each section.
The seventh question is the immediate next step: isolate the pipeline failure. Check the logs to confirm whether the Stage-1 model call actually completed. Persist the HTML the fetcher returned and inspect whether the main content is present in it. Test the extractor's selectors by hand. Once these three steps are done, the answer will be clear — whether the fault lies at the network layer, the parsing layer, or the model layer.
In short: this document contains no real sporting event, athlete name, result, or quotation — deliberately. It is a pending skeleton, to be converted into a full report once source material is available.
