Sri Lanka Representative Six-a-Side Squad Announced for Hong Kong Sixes 2026: Sangeeth Cooray to Captain, Group B With Bangladesh and Scotland

Sri Lanka's national cricket selection committee has announced a seven-member representative squad for the Hong Kong Sixes 2026 tournament. Sangeeth Cooray has been named captain. This is not Sri Lanka's full national team, but a representative side formed for a six-a-side exhibition cricket event. The tournament will be held from 30 October to 1 November 2026 at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Kowloon, Hong Kong. A total of 12 teams will participate. In the first round, Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B alongside Bangladesh and Scotland. A fourth team may be in Group B, though the announcement did not specify this. The Hong Kong Sixes is a fast-paced six-a-side format, not Test, ODI or T20 cricket. As a result, tactical analysis from mainstream formats does not directly apply. The seven-member squad is structurally consistent with the six-a-side format. Although the selection committee announced the squad, no individual player performance data, age, role or recent form was disclosed. Only Sangeeth Cooray's captaincy has been confirmed. Whether he is a national-team member, a domestic cricketer or a former international cannot be determined from the article. Historically, Hong Kong Sixes squads have mixed domestic and first-class players, fringe internationals and often retired stars. Therefore, this seven-member side should not be treated as a full national team. The tournament is not an ICC-recognised format and no ranking points are at stake. As it is a neutral venue, Sri Lanka has no home-ground advantage. The presence of Bangladesh and Scotland in Group B is only a grouping fact, carrying no ranking or seeding meaning. However, it is plausible that having two subcontinental sides and one Commonwealth side in the same group reflects commercial or regional considerations; this is not confirmed. The 12-team event will be held over a compact three-day window, typical of broadcast-friendly exhibition properties. The article contains no commercial data on broadcast rights, sponsorship, team valuation, player salaries, prize money or attendance. Commercial analysis is therefore not possible. Similarly, the tournament's rules, the six-a-side format's over counts, fielding regulations or boundary rules are not mentioned. The selection process was carried out by the national selection committee, indicating standard board-level governance. No integrity, corruption or eligibility controversy is raised. From a risk perspective, this is a low-risk announcement. The key analytical caution is not to mistake this side for the national team and not to compare six-a-side results with mainstream-format performance. While weather or scheduling disruptions are theoretically possible, they are not raised. Public interest in this item is minimal; it is essentially a procedural squad announcement. The story may resurface closer to the event. Signals to watch include the full squad list, Sangeeth Cooray's domestic or first-class record, the identity of the fourth team in Group B, and the event's official playing regulations.
