At the Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok, a six-a-side contest that many expected to go down to the wire was effectively settled inside a single over. Pakistan captain Abbas Afridi took 30 runs off India captain Krunal Pandya in the very first over of the run chase, smashing five consecutive sixes and a four. Chasing 89, Pakistan got home in just 3.5 overs with four wickets in hand.
Afridi's assault set the tone. The very first over yielded 30 runs, with five sixes coming off six balls. Khawaja Nafay then followed his captain's lead in the next over, hitting T Natarajan for two sixes and two fours while Afridi added another boundary. The opening pair put on 59 runs in just two overs before Shashank Singh removed Afridi on the first ball of his over for 35 off eight deliveries. Nafay went on to make 41 off 12 before falling to Rahul Tewatia.
For India, nothing went right. Krunal Pandya was dismissed for a golden duck with the bat and then conceded five sixes off five balls with the ball. Nitish Rana struggled, managing only 19 off 14 before being retired out. Rahul Tripathi made nine off five, and Tewatia also fell for a golden duck. Shashank Singh was the sole source of resistance, smashing 40 off 11 balls with five sixes and two fours.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan had been stunned by the United Arab Emirates, who chased down 107 with one wicket in hand thanks to Khalid Shah's 71 off 20 balls. India are scheduled to face the UAE on Saturday, giving them a chance to reach the semi-finals.
The match underlined a basic truth of the shortest formats: the first over matters more than any other. In six-a-side cricket, giving away 30 runs in an over hands the opposition almost half the target. Pakistan's aggressive intent from ball one, and India's cautious start, were the decisive difference.
