Metal Sintered Porous Filters

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a porous sintered metal usable for filters for removing particulates from exhaust gases emitted from diesel engines, which are referred to as diesel particulate filters (DPFs), filters for collecting dust from combustion gases emitted from incinerators and thermoelectric power plants, catalyst carriers, liquid carriers, etc., a filter comprising such a porous sintered metal, and a method for producing the porous sintered metal.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Heat-resistant honeycombs made of ceramics such as cordierites have conventionally been used as DPFs. However, the ceramic honeycombs are easily broken by vibration or thermal shock. Further, because ceramics have low thermal conductivity, heat spots are locally provided by the combustion of carbon-based particulates trapped in the filter, resulting in cracking and erosion of the ceramic filter. Thus, DPFs made of metals, which are higher in strength and thermal conductivity than ceramics, have been proposed.
